MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS Musical instruments are materials, objects or any element used in accompanying or presenting music. Musical instruments are generally classified into three groups namely; 1. Western Instruments They are instruments which are not made in Africa. The instruments in this group have foreign names most of which are English. Example: Trumpet, Saxophone, Violin, Guitar, Drumset/ Jazzset, Recorder, Flute, (keyboard) Organ etc 2. African Traditional Musical Instruments These are local instruments made and commonly used in Africa for various traditional events. They have names that can be traced to an African language like; Gangan, Bata, Bembe, Ipe, Molo, Agidigbo, Thumb Piano, Fere, Une, Zither, Kakaaki, Sekere, Agogo etc 3. Human Body (clap, voice, fingers snap etc.)

TYPES OF MUSIC 1. Traditional Music Traditional music is the music of a group of people living in a particular environment. It can be performed with or without accompaniment and it is associated with traditional and ritual ceremonies. This type of music is passed down from one generation to another orally as it is not scored nor properly documented. This music can be poetic, historical and satirical and all these types of music are set fit to different types of occasions, ceremonies and festivals. 2. Sacred Music These are the types of music used for religious purposes. In Nigeria for instance the two fore most religions (Christianity and Islam) each has their worship centers.
