TYPES OF MUSIC
1. Traditional Music
Traditional music is the music of a group of people living in a particular environment. It can be performed with or without accompaniment and it is associated with traditional and ritual ceremonies.
This type of music is passed down from one generation to another orally as it is not scored nor properly documented.  This music can be poetic, historical and satirical and all these types of music are set fit to different types of occasions, ceremonies and festivals.
 2. Sacred Music
These are the types of music used for religious purposes. In Nigeria for instance the two fore most religions (Christianity and Islam) each has their worship centers. The kind of music used for various activities such as: worship, praising God or prayers at this various worship centers (church or mosque) is called the sacred music.
3. Secular Music
These are music that is not attached to any religion. The secular music is used for entertainment.
4. Folk Music
Folk music is the spontaneous music of a people, tribe, race or region with an unknown composer. It is a form of traditional music which is used to tell a story or used as interludes within a folk tale. Such music is also passed orally from generations to generations as they are not scored.
5. Western Art Music/ European Art Music
This is a type of music that has its origin from within the European culture. It is a serious music that is scored, it has laid down form, structure, section and movement; it could be vocal or instrumental. It includes sonata, sonatina, concerto, fugue, opera and symphony. Some of the composers are J. S Bach, G. F. Handel, Henry Purcell, Mozart, Beethoven, Vivaldi, Tchaikovsky to mention few.
6. Military Music
This is the type of music that is played by the military, para-military and youth voluntary organizations like Boys brigade. It is played during marching ceremonies like independent day, and at military functions as martial music. The primary and secondary schools these days also use such music to dispatch the morning and afternoon assemblies in their various schools. The pupils or students at these schools use some military melodies and rhythms to march to their different classes or houses.
7. Popular Music
Popular music is the type of music that combines foreign and traditional musical elements making use of tents or lyrics usually in any of the indigenous languages, Pidgin or Queen English. It involves the combination of traditional musical instruments with Latin American guitar, West European dance and band Instruments. The music is used at social engagement for entertainment. It includes: - Juju, High Life, Reggae, Funk, Jazz, Rock – in – roll, Fuji, Sakara, Calypso, Afro and so on.
